Ability Plus Initiative (API) proudly commemorated Deaf Awareness Month and
International Sign Language Day 2024, bringing together members of the Deaf community,
sign language interpreters, advocates, partners, and supporters to celebrate Deaf identity,
promote inclusion, and advocate for equal communication rights.

Celebrating Deaf Identity
Deaf Awareness Month is an opportunity to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements
of the Deaf community. Sign language is more than a means of communication—it is a language,
a culture, and an identity that connects people and creates a strong sense of belonging.
For many Deaf individuals, learning sign language opens the door to confidence, education,
friendship, and active participation in society. It empowers people to express themselves
freely and proudly embrace their identity.
Advocating for Sign Language Rights
Under this year’s theme, “Sign Up for Sign Language Rights,” API called on
government institutions, educational establishments, healthcare providers, employers,
and public service organizations to recognize and integrate sign language into their services.
Equal access to communication is a fundamental human right. By promoting sign language
across every sector of society, we can eliminate communication barriers and create a nation
where Deaf people can participate fully and independently.

- Encourage inclusive employment opportunities.
- Expand sign language interpretation in public services.
- Raise awareness about Deaf culture and rights.
Celebrating New Sign Language Graduates
One of the highlights of the celebration was the presentation of certificates to participants
who successfully completed API’s one-month Sign Language Training Programme.
Their achievement represents an important step toward building a more inclusive society where
communication barriers continue to diminish.

Recognition of Outstanding Champions of Inclusion
As part of the event, Ability Plus Initiative recognized individuals and organizations whose
outstanding contributions have advanced sign language awareness and disability inclusion in Nigeria.
- Inclusive Sign Language Award presented to the President of the ECOWAS Court of Women Forum for promoting sign language in Nigeria.
- Recognition Award presented to Mr. Martin Mary, CEO of Kids & Teens, for his advocacy and support for the Deaf community.
- Award presented to Servelead Global for its continued support of disability inclusion initiatives.
- Recognition presented to the Network of Women with Disabilities for its dedication to empowering women with disabilities.
- Certificates awarded to graduates of the API Sign Language Training Programme.
